- Ask for a current certificate of insurance — both liability and workers' comp — and confirm it's active by calling the insurance agent listed on it, not the contractor.
- Read reviews on more than one platform (Google, Yelp, Facebook, BBB), and pay attention to how they respond to bad reviews, not just the stars.
- Ask for two or three recent local references and actually call them.
- Get every estimate and scope of work in writing before any work begins, and get multiple quotes on bigger jobs.
- Never pay large sums or full payment up front. In Massachusetts, home improvement deposits are generally capped by law at one third except for special-order materials. Be cautious with anyone who demands cash or pressures you to skip a contract.
- Trust your gut. A legitimate professional welcomes these questions. Anyone offended by them just answered a different question for you.
