What's it like living in Essex?

Essex is the North Shore in its most honest form: a river town that built ships for centuries, ringed by marsh and water, and home to the fried clam's birthplace at Woodman's.

  • Is Essex a good town for coastal buyers?

Essex's shipyards launched thousands of wooden vessels, a tradition the Essex Shipbuilding Museum keeps alive, and the town still hugs the river that made it possible. It is small, genuine, and deeply coastal.

The housing is a mix of classic riverfront and marsh-side homes, antique streetscapes, and newer builds, and much of the town relies on septic, so Title 5 is simply part of the purchase conversation.

Life here moves at a coastal pace: marsh light, clam shacks, and boatyards, with the beach towns and commuter routes close by. It is a town people choose deliberately.

On the North Shore

Essex sits at the center of Cape Ann's working coast, minutes from Gloucester and Manchester, and I work it constantly. My Cape Ann town note covers the shipbuilding story and the fried clam, and the ways the river shapes the market here.
