Some days I have to stop and notice how lucky I am to live here, and today was one of them. This is a short, personal note about a gorgeous October day on Boston's North Shore: the perfect fall weather, an afternoon at Crane Beach in Ipswich, and water that felt warm enough to be summer. It is also a reminder, to myself and to anyone who lives here, to enjoy the place we call home while the day is still in front of us.
Key Takeaways
October 2 brought picture-perfect fall weather to the North Shore: a deep blue sky, warm sun, and just enough autumn crispness in the air.
Crane Beach in Ipswich was full of people making the most of the day, from morning beach walks to long afternoons on the sand.
The ocean felt wonderfully warm for October, with readings in the upper 60s, around 65 to 69 degrees, so it genuinely felt like a summer day.
A sunny October day at the beach is a reminder of how lucky we are to live here, and a nudge to enjoy where we live now.
Some days on the North Shore are gifts, and today was one of them. The sky was that deep, clear October blue, the sun had real warmth in it, and the air carried just enough crispness to remind you it is autumn. If you live here, you know exactly the kind of day I mean.
Days like this are why so many of us chose this corner of Massachusetts. The coast does not have to compete with summer when October hands us sunshine like this, and the only sensible response is to get outside and enjoy it, which is exactly what everyone seemed to do.
I spent part of the afternoon at Crane Beach in Ipswich, and the beach was genuinely full. Not summer-crowd full, but full the way a beach gets when the weather is too good to ignore and half the North Shore has the same idea at once.
People of every age were making the most of it: couples walking the shoreline, kids chasing the waves, dogs having the best day of their lives, neighbors stopping to talk like it was July. What struck me most was how happy everyone looked. A sunny October day at the beach has a way of doing that.
The part that still feels like a small miracle is the water. For October, the ocean was wonderfully warm. Real readings today put it in the upper 60s, around 65 to 69 degrees, which is warm enough that stepping in genuinely felt like a summer day.
Plenty of people were swimming, and nobody looked like they were braving it. They were simply enjoying it, the way you would in August.
Those of us who have lived here for years know this does not happen every fall. It is the kind of afternoon you stop and notice, because you know it will not last forever.
Here is the honest part: I feel lucky to live here, and today was a reminder of exactly why. We get the working harbors, the historic downtowns, the marsh views, the beaches, and then, when we least expect it, an October afternoon that feels like July.
A day like today is a reminder to enjoy where you live now, not someday. It is easy to spend this season thinking about the next house, the next move, or the next chapter, and it is worth spending some of it simply being present on the beach.
Wherever the sun finds you this fall, I hope you take the walk, sit in the sun a little longer than you planned, and enjoy what this part of Massachusetts gives us. Days like this are exactly why Ipswich and the rest of the coastal North Shore feel like home.
Days like today are not a once-a-year surprise on the North Shore. They are part of how this coastline lives, in every season, and the people who live here get to enjoy them up close. If you have been wondering what it would be like to live here, I would love to help you find out.
If days like this sound like home to you, give me a call at (978) 500-1480 and let's see what we can do together. It is just a conversation, and we will take it at whatever pace feels right to you.
If you are thinking about living closer to days like these, I would love to talk. Wander through the Ipswich community guide, browse the North Shore town guides, or book a conversation with me any time. Warmly, Kathleen Militello, Realtor, eXp Realty.

Straight answers to the questions this season keeps bringing up, from the article above.
Today, yes. Real readings put the water in the upper 60s, around 65 to 69 degrees, so it genuinely felt like a summer day, and plenty of people were in the water. On a typical October the ocean cools quickly after Labor Day, so a day like this is a gift.
Yes. Crane Beach is part of the Crane Estate in Ipswich, managed by The Trustees of Reservations, and it is open year-round. In October the beach is open from 8:00 AM to sunset, with the entry gate closing 20 minutes before sunset, and the summer crowds are long gone.
Yes. Under Ipswich regulations, dogs are allowed on the beach from October 1 through March 31 and must stay leashed at all times. On a day like today, the dogs on the sand looked every bit as happy as everyone else.
Ipswich pairs the Crane Estate and its beaches with the Great Marsh, historic downtown streets, and a genuine year-round community. If a town where you can be on the sand in ten minutes sounds right, the Ipswich community guide walks through daily life there.
It is one of the best. The summer crowds are gone, the light turns golden, and a warm fall day can turn the beach into something special. Pair it with harvest markets and fall fairs, and October is when the coast shows off.
