North Shore Real Estate · Straight answer from Kathleen

Which North Shore communities have commuter rail service to Boston?

Yes. The MBTA's Newburyport and Rockport lines serve the North Shore coast from Lynn up through Salem, Beverly, Ipswich, and Newburyport on one branch, and from Beverly through Manchester, Gloucester, and Rockport on the other.

  • Can I live on the North Shore and commute to Boston without driving?

On the Newburyport branch, stations include Salem, Beverly, Hamilton and Wenham, Ipswich, Rowley, and Newburyport. On the Rockport branch from Beverly, the stops are Montserrat, Beverly Farms, Manchester, West Gloucester, Gloucester, and Rockport.

Beverly Depot is the junction of both lines, which is why Beverly is often the commuter favorite: two lines, frequent trains, and a ride to North Station that works for many buyers.

Whether the commute is realistic for you depends on your Boston destination and your tolerance for the ride. I can be straight with you about which towns make the commute real and which trade it for the coast.

On the North Shore

The rail is one of the biggest value stories on the North Shore: walkable stations in village centers give buyers a real Boston commute without giving up coastal life, and proximity to the line is visible in prices from Beverly to Newburyport.
