Should I paint my house or replace flooring before selling?

A fresh coat of neutral paint is one of the highest-return moves you can make, and so is removing badly worn carpet. But you do not need to repaint every wall or replace every floor.

Paint the rooms that look tired or dated in a warm, neutral palette, and let the light do the selling. Buyers forgive a lot less easily than you expect when a home feels dirty or dingy.

Carpet is the same story. If it is clean and in good shape, it is fine. If it is stained, worn, or dated, replacing it with a simple, neutral flooring is often cheaper than a price reduction after the fact.

The goal is a home that reads as move-in ready, not a home that has been remodeled into someone else's taste.

On the North Shore

Coastal North Shore homes get a lot of natural light, so bright, beach-adjacent neutrals respect the setting. In historic towns, buyers expect some charm and character in the finishes; fresh paint can carry a tired room without erasing its period feel.
