Ipswich, Manchester-by-the-Sea, and the coast between

Ipswich calls itself America's best-preserved Puritan town, and it has the receipts: more surviving First Period houses, built between 1625 and 1725, than any other town in the country. Walk its streets and you are walking through four centuries of New England, which turns a house hunt into a history lesson.

Then there is the coast. Crane Beach is four miles of wide, dune-backed sand, and the Crane Estate above it, with the great Stuart-style house at Castle Hill, is the grandest stretch of shoreline in the region. The combination of old fields, tidal river, and open beach is why Ipswich feels bigger than its size.

Manchester-by-the-Sea is the North Shore's understated neighbor: a deep, protected harbor, a compact downtown of locally owned shops, and Singing Beach, whose sand sings when you walk across it. It grew up as a summer retreat for Boston's old money, and the grand houses along the shore still set the town's tone.

Year-round, Manchester is small, safe, and remarkably quiet. If you want the coast without the crowds, this is the town.

The coast between Manchester and Ipswich connects through Beverly Farms and Prides Crossing, where the commuter rail hugs the ocean and seaside estates give way to village centers. It is a short, stunning stretch: the same ocean light, a dozen different ways to live on it.
